Unlike the LRT, a KTM train is an old skool relic as far as efficient modern transport for humans are concerned. Do not get the wrong idea. It’s not about getting to your destination as swiftly as possible. The KTM ride is a bleary tour through our hinterlands, a thunderous respite from the rural serenity it blasts into, and a rebuke of modern man’s concept of time. The hours gained from dashing through a track unimpeded by traffic is leveraged by indolent lingering at obscure stations in forgotten towns. It’s about dangling precariously from a speeding train, watching the blinding green of the countryside unravel beside the tracks, and inhaling the aroma of dewy lalang and cow dung .
